This post is dedicated to my twin brother.

Reformatory School Girls

Sydney's Cockatoo Island has a long and illustrious history dating back to the time of first European settlement.

Between 1870-1880, the island was used as an industrial and reformatory school for girls.

On a recent trip to the Island, I took a midnight walk and captured a few eerie images of my own.

Paradox of Education

Recently, I've been musing on my own experiences within various educational institutions and reflecting on some of the teachers and teachings I've encountered in my travels. On the back of this contemplation I did some further reading.

Here's a teaser from an interesting article I read.

The Paradox of Education: A Conversation
Bernhard Poerksen, Humberto R. Maturana
The Journal of Aesthetic Education 40.1 (2006) 25-33

"Immanuel Kant writes in his essay Über Pädagogik that the wide field of education is governed by a fundamental paradox. On the one hand, we want free and self-determined individuals to leave our schools; on the other, we impose a syllabus on the future individuals, force them to attend schools, punish their failures, and persecute their noncompliance. There is, if we follow Kant, an inescapable relationship of tension between the goals and the means of educational efforts: They contradict each other. Would you Agree?"

The Dog Park

I listened to this song today.

Sometimes you need a stranger to talk to
Sometimes you need to go to the observatory
Sometimes a movie star’s eyes gets you through the love and the lies
Sometimes you need a stranger to walk with

~ Rufus Wainwright, Sometimes you need.

And sometimes you need Bill Murray.

Russian Photographers

Recently, I've been enjoying exploring the diverse works of some Russian Photographers. These are a few of my favourite images.

I dream of owning this image.

And Yonder All Before Us Lie

But at my back I always hear
Time’s winged chariot hurrying near;
And yonder all before us lie
Deserts of vast eternity.
